A couple of times a year the private buildings of London open their doors for the weekend and let the public in to look around. On Saturday 19th September (the next weekend that this is happening) we are going to take full advantage of this.
We are going to visit 4 buildings in one day and I've created the meetup around the old custom of what a bride is supposed to carry on her wedding day to bring good luck. Entry to all buildings is free.
So, we will be visiting:
Something old: the Royal Courts of Justice (built in 1874)
meeting at Temple tube station at 10am.
Built by G E Street in the 1870's, the Royal Courts of Justice is one of Victorian London's great public buildings. 13th century gothic given a Victorian interpretation.
Something new: the Lloyds Building (built in 1986)
meeting at Monument tube station at 12pm.
Built by Richard Rogers in the 1980's, home of Lloyd's international insurance market and one of the City's most celebrated buildings, this is - like Rogers' Pompidou Centre in Paris - a key example of British High-Tech architecture. RIBA Award Winner. Sustainable features include many ahead of their time with new initiatives introduced in recent years to further improve energy efficiency.
Something borrowed: Marx Memorial Library (the borrowing of books)
meeting at Farringdon tube station at 2pm.
Built by Sir James Steere in 1737, this Grade II listed building, orginally built as a Welsh Charity School, a library since 1933. Lenin worked here 1902-03 and his office is preserved. Fresco on 1st floor. Late 15th century tunnels at back of building.
Something blue: the Argentine Ambassador's Residence (Argentina has blue on it's flag!)
meeting up at Hyde Park Corner tube station at 4pm.
Built by Thomas Cubitt in 1851, known as the 'Independent North Mansion' and christened by Sydney Herbert as 'Belgrave Villa' and then simply 'The Villa' by his successor the 6th Duke of Richmond. Owned by Argentina since 1936 and with sumptuous interiors still intact.
You can choose to visit as many or as little of the buildings as you like, there will be meeting points before we visit each building to meet additional people, if you don't wish to visit them all, please can you indicate on your RSVP which ones you would like to visit.
After the last building we will be heading for the Tattersalls Tavern bar (click here for a map) near Knightsbridge tube station for a chat over a drink and a snack. We will probably finish the last building around 5pm.
If you can't see us at any station or lose the group, please either text or call.
Hope to see you there!
Regards
Robert
