Cabinet War Rooms & Winston Churchill Museum

This location is shown only to members

Come and explore the Cabinet War Rooms & the Winston Churchill Museum on Saturday 16th January at 1pm!

The Cabinet War Rooms was a secret underground bunker built in 1938 for the British war cabinet so they could continue to direct the war in safety. They are situated under about 20 metres under Whitehall, cover 12,000 square metres and housed a staff of up to 528 people. After the war, they were abandoned, until the early 1980's, when they were reopened as a public museum.

The centrepiece of the War Rooms is the Cabinet Room itself, where Churchill's War Cabinet met. The Map Room is located nearby, from where the course of the war was directed. It is still in much the same condition as when it was abandoned, with the original maps still on the walls and telephones lining the desks. Churchill slept in a small nearby bedroom.

Inside the War Rooms is a museum for Winston Churchill, the British Prime Minister during World War 2. The museum tells the story of Churchill's public and private life, using original objects and documents.

Entry to the War Rooms & Churchill museum is £10.40 each under the group discount.

We are meeting at Westminster Tube Station at 1pm, inside the station, just the other side of the ticket barriers. If you can't see us, give me a call.

If anyone arrives late, the Cabinet War Rooms are located at: Clive Steps, King Charles Street.

Afterwards, we will head to the War Rooms cafe for a chat over a drink and a snack.

Hope to see you there!

Just found out the group entry fee has gone up for 2010 and is now £12 each and not £10.40.

Is it possible to add Haiti Relief to the meet-up topics on this group?
    Or do a mini fundraiser?

A brilliant glimpse into the life of the people who worked in the cabinet war rooms during the war and the Churchill museum was a fantastic insight into a fantastic wartime leader!

It was a bit rushed and I would have liked to have spent more time there. However, the experience of it was amazing, atmospheric, entertaining, informative, and fun.
