Sir John Soane's Museum

Holborn Tube Station (map)

Selected By: Robert

Come along on Saturday 6th February, meeting up at either 12pm, 1pm or 2pm (see below) to visit the Sir John Soane's Museum!

The group visited the museum a couple of years ago and it's an amazing place.

About the museum
Based just behind Holborn tube station in Lincoln's Inn Fields, the museum is the house Sir John designed himself and lived in until his death in 1837.

Sir John was an architect who specialised in a Neo-Classical style and designed many famous buildings in London, including: the Bank of England, 10 Downing Street and the Dulwich Picture Gallery.

He loved collecting things and the museum holds many drawings and pieces of architecture of the buildings he designed, plus Hogarth & three major Canaletto paintings and numerous Roman & Egyptian objects.

Soanes, having been deeply disappointed by the conduct of his two sons, one of whom survived him, was determined to establish the house as a museum to which 'amateurs and students' should have access.

The museum is free to attend!

There is one problem with the group attending, the museum don't allow groups on weekends as it's very narrow in certain places in the museum, so I'm planning to stagger our entrance so we go in in smaller groups.

So if you wish to attend, when you respond 'Yes', could you please indicate whether you would like to attend at 12pm, 1pm or 2pm.

We will be heading to the Pitcher & Piano pub at 42 Kingsway (just round the corner from the museum) afterwards for a chat over a drink. Click here for a map of the pub.

If you can't see us at the station, please call.

Hope to see you there!

Regards

Robert

It was great and exciting to see this museum. I enjoyed the picture gallery and also the Egyptian marble which was the most unusual item. Thank you Robert again for arranging this.
