Roman London Guided Walk & Roman Amphitheatre Visit

Tower Hill Tube Station (map)

Selected By: Robert

Come along on Saturday 20th February at 1pm for a guided walk of Roman London and and to visit the Roman Amphitheatre!

The walk is a private walk just for the group and is led by Denise (the guide of the Bankside & Thames walk). It lasts about 2 hours, finishing at the Roman Amphitheatre remains near Guildhall Art Gallery, which is not far from Bank tube Station. The cost is £7 per person for the walk & £1 per person to visit the Amphitheatre.

A bit about Roman London
Londinium was established as a civilian town by the Romans after the invasion of AD 43. Early Roman London occupied a relatively small area, roughly equivalent to the size of Hyde Park.

In around AD 60, it was sacked by a British tribe called the Iceni led by their queen Boudica. However, the city was quickly rebuilt as a planned Roman town over the following decades. During the 2nd century Londinium was at its height and replaced Colchester as the capital of Roman Britain (Britannia).
Its population was around 60,000 inhabitants and boasted major public buildings, including the largest basilica north of the Alps, a governor's palace, temples, bath houses, amphitheatre and a large fort for the city garrison.

Between 190 and 225 AD the Romans built the defensive London Wall - around the landward side of the city. The wall was about 3 kilometres long, 6 metres high, and 2.5 metres wide.

We will be meeting up at 1pm, inside the station near the ticket barriers at Tower Hill tube station, lookout for the 'Cultureseekers' sign.
Their are 2 tube exits at Tower Hill and we will be waiting at the one slightly nearer to the Tower of London, so when you come through the ticket barriers, if you can't see a 'Cultureseekers' sign and a group of people, you will need to turn left out of the station and go into the other station entrance which is about 20 metres away.

After the walk we will be heading to a local bar for a chat over a drink.

If you can't see us, give me a call.

Hope to see you there.

Regards

Robert

As an Anglo-Italian in love with Rome (where I lived for many years) this walk was really special for me: it has made me feel more 'grounded' and more at home in London. :-)
