'The Merry Wives Of Windsor' @ Shakespeare's Globe Theatre

Anchor Pub (map)

Selected By: Robert

Join us on Wednesday 8th September to see the Shakespeare comedy play 'The Merry Wives Of Windsor' at the Globe Theatre!

This is quite a way off, but tickets are selling very fast!

About the play
Imagining that Mistress Ford and Mistress Page have each fallen for him, the fat knight Sir John Falstaff decides to seduce them both, as much for their husbands’ money as for their personal charms. Wise to the old rogue’s tricks, the women turn the tables on him with a series of humiliating assignations and a very damp, extremely smelly laundry basket!

Featuring many characters from Henry IV Parts 1 and 2, Shakespeare’s brilliantly constructed farce, which gave birth to a tradition that reaches down to the modern TV sitcom.

Ticket prices range from £10 standing to £15-£35 in the lower and middle galleries (I'm going to be booking a £15 ticket in the lower galleries). I'm no longer booking tickets, so if you wish to attend, you will need to book by clicking here...

The aim is to meet up beforehand for a drink in the 'The Anchor' pub, 34 Park Street, which is on the river, near to the Globe (nearest station: London Bridge) at about 6:15pm, then around 7pm we will walk to the theatre.

I will be sitting at a table in the pub with a 'Cultureseekers' sign on the table (give me a call if you can't find us).

Click here for a link to the pub...

If you can't see us at the pub, please call.

Hope to see you there!

Regards

Robert

Those familiar with the 1975 BBC TV comedy series 'Fawlty Towers' will recognise instantly many of the quirky mannerisms of the principal character, Basil Fawlty (played in the series by John Cleese), in Andrew Havill's playing of Ford in the Merry Wives of Windsor.

The actress Serena Evans who played Mistress Page was in the 1995 BBC comedy series, the Thin Blue Line:

I'm afraid I didn't appreciate not being able to hear what the actors were saying when their backs were turned to us nor not being able to see the whole stage. I wouldn't go again and sit in those seats. I think I'd have to try standing but, to be honest, having to choose between either standing for two hours or not being able to hear half of it, puts me off somewhat. However the atmosphere, colour and authenticity of the theatre and performance were great and I suppose you can't have both since the idea is to represent theatre as it was in Shakespeare's day

Hi, A good night out - I enjoyed meeting the members I chatted with before the show (very well attended) - a nice bunch and the pub was good. The show was a delight - I did lose a little of the dialogue at times from my seat in the 'middle gallery' but my hearing always 'pin' sharp anyway. I would have liked the opportunity to go for a post show discussion/drink afterwards but as far as I know nothing was planned (I guess most of us needed to get home though)

It was a great show and we had a great time although we had a restricted view but enjoyed the show. Many thanks Robert

I thought it was brilliant. The only draw back was at times it was difficult to hear the performers. The storyline is very funny and lighthearted.

Really good evening, thanks Rob for organising. Shakespeare's comedies can have quite sadistic touch to them at times with, in this one, Falstaff getting treated pretty badly - teased and given the come on by the scheming wives, dumped in the river, beaten and generally made to look a fool - though of course he does deserve it (unlike poor old Malvolio in Twelfth Night) but in the end you can't help feeling a bit sorry for him old rogue that he is. You feel even sorrier when you know what is to come: his being ditched by his drinking and whoring comrade the young Prince Hal when he becomes king. Anyway thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

Very good...seen it two years ago and a lot the same cast was in it again.....lowering the tone....including one actor who was in London's Burning - a show that used to be on ITV on Sundays when I was a teenager. Only criticism was I didn't know these seats would be restricted view....I would rather of paid more for a better seat or stood.
