Bethnal Green Tube Station (map)
Once a year the private buildings of London open their doors for the weekend and let the public in to look around. On the weekend of the 18th - 19th September we are going to take full advantage of this visiting buildings on the Saturday and the Sunday.
Entry to all buildings is free.
So, on Sunday we will be visiting:
Hackney Empire (built in 1901)
meeting at Bethnal Green tube station at 9:30am.
Designed by Frank Matcham, the empire is an exuberant Grade II listed auditorium and the most perfect example of Edwardian variety theatre remaining in London. We might have to get a bus to the empire as it's quite a walk.
12:30pm - Stop for lunch in Potters Fields (next to City Hall)
City Hall (built in 2002)
meeting at London Bridge tube station (near the Tooley Street exit) at 1:30pm
Designed by Foster & Partners, it's the home of the Mayor of London and London Assembly, an environmentally-aware building with innovative spiral ramp and fine views across London.
The Rose Theatre (built in 1587)
meeting at Southwark tube station at 3:30pm
Designed by Philip Henslowe, the Rose was the first theatre on London's Bankside. It was at the height of its commercial success in the 1590s, with a repertory that included plays by William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe and Thomas Kyd.
Afterwards, we will be heading to a local pub to chat over a drink.
You don't have to attend all the events, we will be meeting up at tube stations at the start of each place, so we can meet you there.
On the day, I will be giving out itineries so you know where we will be at anytime, so you can easily catch us up if you want to spend longer in a particular building.
If you can't see us at any tube station or lose the group, please either text or call.
Hope to see you there!
Regards
Robert

Good luck!
It was my first meeting with London Cultureseekers and my first Open House. Was equally impressed by the concentration of interesting people and the beauty of the architecture. The Saturday sun was a great compliment to the event. Thanks Robert for organising these tours!
